Formaldehyde (Textile Finishing)
dmdheu · dimethylol dihydroxyethylene urea · wrinkle-resistant resin
Formaldehyde-releasing resins (primarily DMDHEU) are applied to cotton and polyester blends to create wrinkle-free and no-iron finishes. The resins off-gas free formaldehyde — a known carcinogen (IARC Group 1) — especially during initial use. Regulatory limits range from 15–330 ppm depending on the country and end use.
Concerns
- Releases free formaldehyde — IARC Group 1 human carcinogen
- Causes allergic contact dermatitis and skin sensitization
- Highest risk with new garments; washing reduces residual levels significantly
- Infant clothing standards are strictest (15 ppm in Japan)
Regulatory flags
- ⚑IARC Group 1 carcinogen
- ⚑Japan restricts formaldehyde in textiles — ≤75 ppm adults, ≤20 ppm children
- ⚑EU REACH restricts articles releasing formaldehyde
